THE NAVIGATORS FEATURING TERRY HIATT ON GUITAR
10:00 - 11:00
Master Guitarist Terry Hiatt Joins the Navigators
Guitar great, Terry Hiatt has been playing for 50+ years and in that time has played and recorded with such artists as the late Sista Monica Parker, Terrie Odabi, Paula Harris, EC Scott, Lydia Pense, Lara Price, Jerry Miller, Terry Haggerty, Chris Cain, and Kid Anderson. He played country with the Appaloosa Band, the Keller Sisters, and Chris Bigford. He has fronted original projects: Big Science, Running With Scissors, Amazing Colossal Guys.
The Navigators are a collection of local musicians who are known as the Coastside’s favorite Party Band. Members have played with Pel and the Pelicans, Big Earl, Motor City, Barrelhouse and Claddagh. This performance is dedicated to former band leader Pel Houchin (who recently retired due to the onset Parkinson’s) and the amazing loving folks who run the Coastside Adult Day Health Center.
With Terry Hiatt at the wheel, expect a joyous ride through the Blues, Rock N’ Roll and General Gumbo that will touch your soul.
The Navigators are Grant Walters, Paul Newman, Bill Barton, Vince Fornesi (and special guests).
GRANT'S STORY: In the late 80's and early 90s, founded the Miramar Blues club and we put together shows that featured the guest artist from the Bay Area with a house band once a month. We had card carrying members and put most the shows on at the Miramar Beach Inn. Garth Webber was instrumental in getting us guests like Stu Blank who I ended up working with from Time to time. Eventually, ( recently Passed) Tony Tichenor , Marty Atikinson, James Atkinson and Pel Houchin formed the popular Barrelhouse Players that ended up backing up many great performers....including the great Vassar Clements and many others, including the great drummers , Jimmy Sanchez and the late Brett
Jackson, on drums. Many gigs were without drums.
Every Wed. night at Ketch Joanne/Harbor Barwhere we played late into the night.
The Late Marty Atkinson ( pictured above) was a key player and is still an inspiration. Eventually I began to produce shows including the Pacific Coast Dream Machines ...( for over 30 years) with the help of my talented friends made over the year....many are gone...many still play on.... During this time ...my wife Tammy played host to the tribe of Bandmates that crashed at our home....dancing all the time...and saying " don't stop the Carnaval". Coastal Access Productions
Ryan Walters ( my cuz) (Hawaiian Acres Dirt Band) was my first Harmonica Teacher. In the Mid 80's: I helped found the Chico Blues Society with my Mentor and Master Harmonica Player and Blue Rock'it recording artist Ralph Shine. We shared a love of vintage music equipment and he schooled me on the harmonica players...both alive and past....We produced Harmonica Blowouts for some of the greatest players of our time...and up and coming players like me and my Cousins Ross and Ryan Walters . Ralph passed and left me with a strong desire to continue my quest for the Harmonica knowledge and brotherhood. Andy Santana has to be mentioned as a great singer, player and supporter.
Eventually, I became side man to the Great Matt Brewer ( with Vinnie on Bass). He and Rich Felix ( highway one band) taught me to respect the masters, and I learned first hand about the music and the Business. I played every week at the Rose Room, Harbor Bar, Miramar Beach Inn, San Benito House, San Gregorio General Store, Grant and Green, and became welcome as a back up vocalist who owned a good PA and knew how to play Harmonica.
